What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?

For example, when you find yourself knee-deep in water and realizing that you need to call in the pros immediately. Because plumbing emergency can really catch you off guard.

Timing is everything when it comes to plumbing concerns, and the appropriate reaction may be a huge difference between a quick fix and a full-scale disaster. But what exactly qualifies as a plumbing emergency? Is it necessary to contact your plumber at midnight for every leak and blockage, or can some wait until morning?

Water Leak, Damaged or Burst Pipes, Low Water Pressure or No Water, Clogged Drains, Sewer Backups, Water Heater Failure, Gas Leaks - 24/7- Re-Store Services

Let’s find out what are the most common scenarios that qualify as plumbing emergencies:

    1. Water Leak – some leaks can be unnoticed, but it’s almost always an emergency and needs to be addressed ASAP. Water damage is a progressive condition. The only thing which we suggest to do if you suspect a leak is to turn off the water (if you know where the valve is) and call the plumber immediately. If you see a small leaks and think that you can control them by yourself – be careful. DIY solutions could destroy your property and belongings. There are a lot of reasons why a water leak can be a disaster. Larger leaks, such as those from your main water supply, is no joke and require immediate attention. If you do nothing, these leaks can cause serious water damage and mold growth, posing health risks and requiring expensive repairs.
    2. Damaged or Burst Pipes – if you like to fix everything by yourself, unfortunately, this isn’t just a ‘grab some duct tape’ situation. These can quickly escalate to flooding, causing big damage to your house. In such cases, rapid action is needed to prevent massive water damage and financial loss.
    3. Low Water Pressure or No Water – a water deficit in your San Diego house may be more than just an annoyance; it can be an emergency, especially during the hot season. If many faucets are affected, it’s a signal that something’s wrong with your plumbing system and requires professional inspection.
    4. Clogged Drains – it could happen in every house, sometimes. Many of us have been there. But severe clogs, indicated by slow drainage or bubbling water, may point to more serious underlying issues. To avoid future difficulties, immediate expert assistance is needed.
    5. Sewer Backups – no one wants to handle it on their own. So, then you should contact a plumber right away. Sewer backups are more than simply an irritation, they can pose serious health risks and cause significant property damage. These backups, which are frequently caused by blocked pipes or overcrowded municipal sewer systems, can cause a disturbing overflow of wastewater in homes and businesses. It’s vital to spot the early warning indications of a potential sewer backup, such as multiple clogged drains or gurgling sounds coming from toilets and sinks. Preventing these unpleasant and dangerous situations requires regular maintenance and immediate action.
    6. Water Heater Failure – for some people, lack of hot water is an emergency, too. Especially, when it happens in the middle of winter.
    7. Gas Leaks – do you have a headache but don’t know what’s causing it? And is there a sulfur or rotten eggs smell? In addition to a headache, a gas leak can bring dizziness, breathing difficulty, sore throat, some other irritation, bloody noses, loss of consciousness, disorientation, or even memory issues. It’s important to note that these symptoms can vary in intensity and aren’t always obvious, especially with slow leaks. If you discover a gas leak, you must act quickly to avoid any health dangers.

    CAMERA INSPECTIONS SEWER DRAIN PIPE

Plumbing issues in sewer and drain pipes can be hard to detect. With advances in technology, trying to locate the problem doesn’t involve digging up exploratory holes anymore. Rather, a professional inspects the pipelines and sewer systems with a small camera.

Usually, the city or municipality is not responsible for plumbing repairs on residential property. That means that homeowners are obligated to maintain their sewer lines that run to the main underground sewer pipe. An accurate and time-saving piping network checkup utilizes a plumbing camera that allows pros to evaluate the condition of your pipes in real time.

A proper inspection once in a while is going to save you money on any possible plumbing issues and let you avoid expensive repairs.

How Do You Inspect a Drain?

As the name implies, drain camera inspection services deploy a dedicated digital drain camera for the thorough examination of a drainage system. A high-resolution camera linked by a hose to a digital display helps to inspect pipes of all sizes for the presence of clogs, cracks, corrosion, and so on.

Sewer camera inspections carried out by pros are used for the detection of:

Drain Camera Inspection Services: Key Benefits

    • Reasonable rates. Regular servicing is always a money-saver as it allows you to locate minor issues in order to avoid a sudden disaster that can result in costly repairs.
    • High accuracy. An all-digital plumbing camera connected to a flexible hose shows the state of the pipes and sends the image to the display. For a qualified specialist, this is the most precise way to pin down a problem. The checkup process can be recorded and stored on a data carrier for further assessment.
    • Non-invasive problem detection. Years ago, to detect a problem, plumbers would need to cut into walls or dig through your yard to locate a leak. Armed with a hi-tech drain camera, pros can see every inch of your otherwise hidden drainage system without unearthing the pipes.
    • Prevention of severe plumbing complications. Minor clogs can lead to burst pipes if not addressed quickly, cracks and small leaks can result in mold growth and flooding that are much more expensive to mitigate and require home restoration afterwards. You can extend the lifespan of your pipes with appropriate care.
    • Preliminary check before buying a new home. If you don’t want any unpleasant surprises, request an inspection prior to purchasing a new house. Inexpensive and fast checkup saves you from unexpected issues and problems-induced headaches.
    • Preliminary check before remodeling. You may need a camera inspection before adding a bathroom or remodeling your kitchen in order to make sure that your pipes can handle the increase in wastewater.

  • How to Diagnose Plumbing Drain Problems

How to Diagnose Plumbing Drain Problems

Plumbing drain issues can quickly turn into a homeowner’s worst nightmare, frequently arising unexpectedly and leading to substantial inconvenience, costly repairs, and potential damage to the property. These problems can range from minor annoyances to major emergencies, disrupting daily routines and potentially causing long-term structural damage. Early detection and understanding of the signs of plumbing drain issues are vital for a swift and efficient resolution, minimizing disruption and damage.

This comprehensive guide delves into the common symptoms associated with plumbing drain problems, such as slow drainage, unusual noises, foul odors, and water discoloration, you can take proactive steps to mitigate the problem before it escalates.

    Identifying Common Drain Issues

    Slow Draining

One of the most obvious signs of a drain problem is when water drains slower than usual. This indicates a blockage in the pipes, restricting water flow. Regularly checking the drainage speed in sinks and showers can help catch this issue early.

How to Diagnose Plumbing Drain Problems - restorationserv.com

    Unusual Noises

Gurgling or bubbling sounds coming from your drains or plumbing fixtures can indicate trapped air, often caused by pipe blockages. These sounds may suggest a need for professional inspection.

    Bad Odors

Foul smells emanating from your drains could signify decaying food, waste material, or other obstructions in your plumbing system. Persistent bad odors, despite cleaning, point towards deeper drain issues.

    Water Discoloration

Any change in water color, such as brown or yellow hues, could be due to rust or sediment buildup in your pipes. This is a clear indication that your plumbing system requires attention.

    Mold and Dampness

Excessive moisture or the presence of mold around pipes and walls hints at possible leaks in your plumbing system. Mold growth is not only a health hazard but also suggests ongoing water damage.

    Visible Pipe Damage

Physical damage to pipes, such as cracks or bulges, often leads to leaks and water damage. Regular inspection of exposed pipes can help in early identification of such issues.

    Water Bills Spike

An unexplained increase in your water bill could be due to hidden leaks or dripping faucets. Monitoring your monthly water usage can alert you to such anomalies.

    Stains or Damaged Walls

Brown stains on the ceiling, particularly under a bathroom, often signal a plumbing leak.

Such stains can not only spoil the appearance but also indicate serious problems in the water supply system. Additionally, any changes in the color or shape of walls and floors should be noted. Colored, swollen, or deformed surfaces may suggest the accumulation of water behind these structures, resulting from a leaking pipe. In such cases, it is recommended to consult professionals as soon as possible to prevent further deterioration and potential harm to health and property.

    Unusual Changes on the Lawn

If you notice patches of raw soil or areas with excessively growing grass on your lawn, it could also be a sign of plumbing issues. These phenomena often indicate underground water leaks from pipes, which might not be immediately visible. The water seeping from damaged pipes provides excessive moisture to the soil, leading to changes in vegetation growth. It’s particularly important to pay attention to these signs as they can indicate serious damage to underground utilities, requiring immediate attention from professionals.

Regular maintenance and early detection are crucial in managing plumbing drain problems effectively. Being aware of the signs, such as slow drains, unusual noises, odors, water discoloration, mold, visible pipe damage, spikes in water bills, and poor water pressure, allows homeowners to take proactive steps to address these issues before they worsen. How to get rid of mold on walls San Diego

Essential Tools and Substances for Mold Removal

Before you begin the process of removing mold from your walls, it’s essential to gather the necessary tools and substances to ensure an effective and safe removal. Here’s what you’ll need:

    Safety Gear

    • N95 mask or respirator to protect from inhaling mold spores.
    • Rubber gloves to protect your skin from harsh cleaning chemicals and mold contact.
    • Safety goggles without ventilation holes to prevent mold spores from entering your eyes.

    Cleaning Solutions

    • Bleach: A strong disinfectant that kills mold on non-porous surfaces. Use in a diluted form, typically a 3:1 water-to-bleach ratio.
    • White vinegar: An effective, natural alternative for killing surface mold.
    • Baking soda: Used in a solution with water, it’s safe and natural, ideal for sensitive areas.
    • Commercial mold removal products: Choose products specifically designed for mold remediation if you prefer not to use homemade solutions.

    Tools for Application and Removal

    • Spray bottle or sponge: For applying vinegar or bleach solutions directly to the moldy areas.
    • Scrub brush or scouring pad: To physically remove the mold from the surface after the cleaning solution has been applied.
    • Plastic sheeting and tape: To seal off the area and prevent mold spores from spreading to other parts of the house during removal.
    • Bucket: For mixing cleaning solutions and rinsing after mold removal.
    • Clean rags or towels: For drying the area after cleaning. Ensure these are laundered or disposed of after use to avoid spreading spores.

    Ventilation

    • Fan or dehumidifier: To help dry out the area and improve air circulation, reducing the moisture that mold thrives on.

How to Remove Mold from Walls

    1. Identifying Mold. Search for visible mold signs, which may appear as black, green, or white specks. Be aware that mold might be concealed behind wallpaper or paneling.
    1. Prioritize Safety. Wear protective gear, including gloves, a mask, and safety goggles, to shield yourself from mold spores.
    1. Ventilation. Enhance airflow by opening windows and doors, helping to dilute mold spore concentration in the air.
    1. Cleaning Solution. Create a mixture of bleach and water at a 3:1 ratio or opt for commercial mold removal products. For natural alternatives, consider using white vinegar or a mixture of baking soda and water.
    1. Isolate the Area. Use tape to seal the mold-affected zone, preventing spore dispersion.
    1.  Apply the chosen cleaning solution and allow it to act for at least 10 minutes, ensuring thorough disinfection.
    1. Rinsing and Drying: Wash the area with water and dry thoroughly, either manually with a towel or by air drying.

  • How to Unclog a Sink Drain – 10 Proven Methods

How to Unclog a Sink Drain – 10 Proven Methods

A clogged sink, be it kitchen or bathroom, is extremely annoying. Before you contact a plumber to solve the issue, you can try some safe and proven techniques to tackle the problem and unclog a sink drain.

How to Unclog a Sink Drain Using Natural Substances?

For small and moderate drain clogs, you can try natural substances that are available in every kitchen.

    1. Boiling water

You need to boil a full kettle of water and pour the water into the opening in 3-4 steps. The technique is efficient for smaller clogs.

    2. Salt and baking soda

    • Mix ½ cup of table salt with ½ cup of baking soda.
    • Then pour the dry mixture into the opening and leave it for 10-15 min.
    • Next, pour boiling water down the sink drain (from 1L to 4L).
    • Cover the drain right away to facilitate the reaction inside the pipe.

This variant works for minor to moderate obstruction.

    3. Vinegar and baking soda

    • Spoon ½ cup (around 125 ml) of baking soda into the drain.
    • Add ½ cup of 5-9% vinegar.
    • Cover the opening.
    • Once the fizzing sound of the reaction disappears, add another 125 ml of vinegar.
    • Plug up the drain, and keep it covered for 15-20 min.
    • Prepare 4L of boiling water and pour it into the plumbing to rinse the remains.

How to Unclog a Sink Drain Chemically?

Chemical solutions for unclogging sinks require special attention, as they differ in contents and aren’t suitable for all piping. However, they can dissolve even stubborn blockages and clear clogged drains.

    1. Drain cleaner

They are easily available at most stores at affordable prices. Before purchasing a specific brand, read thoroughly the instructions and see if it is suitable for the sink plumbing. Some drain cleaners aren’t recommended for plastic pipes, while others aren’t applicable for cast iron pipes, as they can further the corrosion.

    • Acid cleaner. Based on the reaction of the hydrogen ions with the substance obstructing the drain, acid cleaners are quite strong.
    • Caustic cleaner. The active ingredients of this type of cleaner are hydroxide ions that can be effective against small to moderate clogs.
    • Enzyme cleaner. Not as powerful as acid cleaners, enzyme-based cleaners contain bacterial enzymes that consume organic debris that block the drain.

Note: Avoid using chemical cleaners in case you’ve tried bleach and other chemical substances to unclog the drain, and vice versa. Combinations of various chemical substances can discharge hazardous gasses.

    2. Bleach

Try pouring 250ml of bleach down the drain. 5-10 min later, let water rinse the plumbing unit for 5-10 min. If the clog is persistent and the sink begins to fill, close the faucet and wait till the water drains.

    3. Caustic soda

In fact, caustic soda is an essential component of some drain cleaners.

Hence, you can make a DIY cleaner at home: 3 cups of caustic soda should be mixed with ¾ gallon of water. Wait till caustic soda is diluted and mix it well. Pour this mixture into the clogged drain. Leave it for 20-30 minutes. Next, rinse the drain and piping with boiling water (around 1 gallon).

local plumber to clear the clogged drain - San Diego - Re-Store Services

What Household Tools Can Help to Unclog a Sink Drain?

    1. Sink plunger. Hold a plunger over the opening, keeping it straight. Fill a clogged sink with water (3-4” is enough) press the plunger down and lift it up (keeping the opening sealed) for half a minute vigorously. Then just pop it off to let the water run down the piping. For severe blockage, you will have to repeat the procedure several times and plunge for several minutes.

Note: Do not plunge a sink after using a drain cleaner, as chemicals can splash onto your skin.

    2. Bent wire and snake. Take a clothes hanger and try to straighten it as much as possible. Use one end of the wire to make a small hook and slide it into the drain, keeping the wire closer to the side (centered it can push the clog deeper down). Once you cannot push the wire down, turn the wire, trying to hook the clog. Pull the wire up. Let hot tap water run for 5 minutes. If this doesn’t help, repeat the procedure, keeping the wire closer to another side. “Snake”, a special flexible wire, is used similarly.

    3. Dry/wet vacuum. Sometimes clogs can be removed using a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. With a vac hose attached to the blowing end, place the nozzle on the drain and turn on the vacuum. Let the vac work for 5-10 sec and check if the drain is still blocked.

    4. P-trap cleaning. Sometimes large clogs can be removed by cleaning a P-trap under the sink. Prepare a bucket and place it under the sink. Unscrew the P-trap and let debris slip into the bucket. You can use a small brush to clean the trap inside, then rinse it with water and reattach it back.

Water Leak Detection Services and Slab Leak Repair in San Diego

Timely water leaks detection saves you time and money. Suspect a leak? The Re-Store Services provides a full range of leak detection and water leak repair & restoration services. Available 24/7, our pros can tackle leak repair of any complexity.

Water leaks and consequent water damage can cause frustration if not treated right away. Unfortunately, leak detection isn’t easy without special equipment, so you have to watch out for warning signs. Once you’ve noticed the signs listed below, contact water leak repair services promptly to avoid severe water damage and associated higher costs.

How can I find out where water is leaking from?

If it’s not a kitchen faucet dripping underneath, leaks can be challenging to locate, particularly when it comes to slab leak detection. Don’t wait till the problem will get out of hand and watch out for signs pointing at a potential leak.

Signs that you need to call a water leak repair service:

    • Sudden spikes in a water bill
    • Low water pressure
    • The water meter dial is moving when pipes aren’t in use
    • Musty odor
    • Damp spots on floors or moisture under carpets
    • Sound of running water
    • Wet patches or cracks on walls
    • Standing water around the perimeter of the house. This is an indicator of a slab leak.  If your property was built on a concrete slab, your plumbing is most likely embedded in the concrete which makes detecting leaks a lot harder. That’s why it is so important to take immediate steps to call out professionals to avoid significant damage to your home.

If you notice one of these signs, contact the water leak repair service promptly — trained specialists can locate and fix the leaky piping. Homeowners should pay special attention to slab leak detection as unwanted water in the slab might threaten the structure’s safety, and the slab leak repair cost cannot compare with the much higher costs of the post-damage restoration.

Again, plumbing water leak detection is pretty challenging as in most cases DIY methods do not work. To keep your family safe and prevent further costs of complex damage mitigation and post-damage remodeling, call pros specialized in plumbing water leak detection and repairs as soon as you’ve suspected a leak.

When to Hire a General Contractor or Restoration Contractor?

Whenever you give a thought to improving a home or restoring it after damage and start searching for remodeling services, you get confused about how to differentiate a general contractor from a restoration contractor. Well, what specialist will be a better choice for remodeling a kitchen, water damage mitigation, or post-damage remodeling? All questions are clarified below.

    What Is a General Contractor?

In brief, a general contractor is specialized in new construction, as well as remodeling. So, whenever you decide to build anything new or remodel a house (add an extension or redesign the interior), a general contractor carries out the job from A to Z.

Larger companies have teams consisting of plumbers, carpenters, electricians, construction workers, and sometimes even designers or architects. Some companies cooperate with dedicated subcontractors.

Note that cosmetic home updates aren’t usually covered by the policy, hence you need to prepare funds to cover the expenses.

    general contractor - restorationserv.com

    What Is a Restoration Contractor?

A restoration contractor can restore your property after it has been damaged. For example, when a property is destroyed as a result of water or fire damage, a homeowner has to search for a water restoration contractor or fire restoration contractor, accordingly. Restoration requires specific knowledge, skills, and equipment (IR detectors, moisture meters, dehumidifiers, etc.); general construction specialists don’t always have the expertise in the restoration of damaged structures. Hence, a restoration contractor is needed to restore a house/office to its initial condition.

Insurance companies usually cover damage restoration; however, insurance terms and conditions may vary. Thus, call a water restoration contractor to evaluate the scale of damage and repair costs. The same applies to fire restoration contractors. Local pros will help you to file a claim and negotiate with the policy provider.

In fact, some insurance restoration contractors offer remodeling services too. Yet still, remember that remodeling services aren’t typically covered by insurance. When you consider remodeling your home after it has been damaged by water or fire, ask the restoration contractor about coverage, so that you could plan your budget.

    restoration contractor - restorationserv.com

    How to Select a Contractor?

A choice of a contractor depends on the work type: repair & restore, remodel, or construction.

If you face water or fire damage, search for a damage restoration contractor. The faster you hire a contractor, the faster the damage will be eliminated at lower costs. Seek a company that provides emergency services, so that pros could tackle the problem as fast as possible.

For remodeling projects, except for post-damage renewal, you can opt for both types of contractors. In this case, you have more time to look for a company and discuss ideas and remodeling plans.

What Are Signs of a Good Contractor?

Finding a trustworthy contractor is like a challenging quest. To streamline the search process, use the checklist below to filter scams and identify trustworthy contractors.

    • License. The first thing you need to make sure of is that a chosen company has a license for providing construction/remodeling services.
    • Locality. Give preference to local contractors as they are well aware of building codes in the neighborhood.
    • Experience. Ask a contractor about the portfolio as not all companies are experienced with both commercial and residential property. Even a contractor that has hundreds of successful commercial property projects might not be the optimal choice for remodeling your house.
    • Reviews. Use third-party platforms to read reviews about local contractors or ask colleagues and friends for first-hand references.
    • Estimation. Most remodeling services contractors offer free online and on-site estimation. Once you’ve selected several (at least three) companies, request quotes to ensure the services will fit the budget.
    • Insurance. A reliable contractor must have a certificate of insurance. Don’t hire an uninsured company as you might be liable for unfortunate incidents occurring on your property.
    • Deposit. An industry standard is one-third of the total amount as a deposit. Definitely, a company will request a deposit to cover the costs of required permits and to order supplies. To secure yourself, pay via bank card or checks; avoid cash in any events (except for tips). If a contractor asks for a large cash deposit, this is a red flag and a clear indication to look for another company.
    • Contract. No unwritten or gentlemen’s agreements, all details must be specified in a contract. Generally, an agreement contains start and finish dates, payment terms, project plans (layouts, materials, and so on), warranties, breach of a contract, and additional conditions (potential delays which may affect the schedule; for instance, a leaky pipe discovered during the project.)

The Importance of Water Damage Restoration Services

Any incidents, be it burst piping, leaky faucet, or heavy rains, resulting in water damage are frustrating and sometimes require high-cost repair works. Hence, many homeowners postpone water damage restoration and seek DIY solutions. However, postponing repairs may unintentionally intensify the damage, worsening the situation and piling up expenses. Excess water ignored for prolonged periods might trigger more destructive consequences, undermining or weakening the structure of a house, ruining your belongings, and provoking mold infestation. Timely water damage restoration prevents the wrecking effects of unwanted water and high moisture content inside the house and saves you money.

    Why Water Remediation Is Important?

Seeing your precious home destroyed by water is quite stressful and obviously, any homeowner wishes to bring it back to normal ASAP. In fact, prompt water damage restoration is indeed crucial as it bars you from:

    Higher costs

When you opt for certified water damage restoration service as first go after the incident, you actually pay less compared to delayed repairs or DIY attempts. Pros inspect your home, evaluate the scope of work, develop a work schedule, and estimate costs. They get down to work immediately as the longer excess water stays, the more destructive its impact is.

Puffed-up flooring, wet carpeting & furniture, wet walls, and mold spots appearing and invading larger areas aren’t all aftereffects you might deal with if water damage isn’t addressed straight away. Add here the risk of the electrical appliances malfunctioning, so the total costs may increase dramatically if you put off repairs.

    Health problems

Water damage can pose a significant threat to house inhabitants’ health if not mitigated and treated swiftly.

Contaminated water from burst waste pipes can contain harmful bacteria and microbes responsible for such diseases as amebiasis, dysentery, and giardiasis. The worst thing is that viruses and bacteria remain on affected surfaces even when excess water has been dried out.

Stagnant clean water can be hazardous too. Besides attracting various insects such as cockroaches, mites, or mosquitoes, excess water might lead to mold growth (24-48 hours is enough for mold to develop). Environments with high moisture content are perfect for mold spores’ propagation. Mold spores are toxic to humans and pets. People with allergic reactions and asthma are particularly vulnerable; healthy people might also suffer from shortness of breath, fatigue, headaches, or rash, though.

If smaller mold spots in the bathroom can be removed using DIY solutions, larger mold patches on drywalls or flooring should be treated by pros equipped with dedicated IR mold detectors, dehumidifiers, and tools for mold remediation to prevent mold recurrence.

    Structural damage

Structural damage and related expenses represent yet another disadvantage of delayed remediation. Ignored leaks may result in weakening the entire house construction which can cost thousands to be fixed.

To avert unfortunate situations and mitigate destruction, water damage restoration experts recommend:

    • Maintenance of the plumbing system. A scheduled once-a-year inspection might save you money in the long run as worn-out pipes and tiny leaks can be detected and fixed before the problem looms large.
    • Maintenance of the roof and drainage system. Quite often lack of regular maintenance results in roof leaks.
    • Sump pump installation. In case of natural disaster, for instance, a prolonged rainy season, a sump pump installed in a basement might be handy to prevent flooding inside the home.
    • Call local water damage specialists ASAP whenever you spot excess water. 24-48 hours will be enough for mold spores to spread. To avoid greater damage, call pros at the first signs of unwanted water.

Whenever you have to deal with water damage, do not delay cleanup and repairs to stave off undesirable consequences. The optimal solution is to get in touch with a trusted local water damage restoration crew providing emergency services and ready to be off 24/7.

The Re-Store Services team operates in San Diego County and provides a broad range of certified repair and after-damage restoration services. Our crew is available 24/7. How to detect a slab leak? First signs, common causes & repairs

Dripping water is a headache for any homeowner, but when a leak is unnoticeable, it may become a threat to the entire construction and lead to more expensive repairs. Leaky pipes under the concrete foundation of your house are commonly called slab leaks.

Not always obvious, a slab leak leads to increased water bills, deteriorated construction elements, and mold infestation. Yet still, by being attentive to slab leak signs, you can settle a problem at the outset and hire pros to detect and repair the damaged pipe right away. But let’s take it step-by-step.

    What Is a Slab Leak?

Briefly, a slab leak is a leakage in piping that runs under the concrete slab foundation. You can face just a tiny trickle, a serious crack, or even a burst pipe.  Any slab leak requires a professional to diagnose, detect a precise location, and fix it.  Do not attempt to try DIY solutions if you suspect a problem in your slab.

    Is a slab leak dangerous?

Yes, slab leaks are dangerous and require your immediate attention. If you neglect a slab leak for a while, it can undermine the structural integrity of your house and lead to severe health disorders due to water pollution and mold growth. In fact, besides damaged carpeting, uneven flooring, nasty odor, wall or foundation cracks, and a higher utility bill, untreated massive slab leaks can be the reason for the house to shift.

What does a slab leak look like?

Actually, all situations are different: you can hear water dripping or notice buckling floorboards. Decreased water pressure and warm spots on your flooring may also point to a potential slab leak, let alone puddles or pools on the flooring or cracked walls.

How common is a slab leak?

Slab leaks are considered pretty common for older constructions with concrete slabs. In fact, most homeowners in the US sooner or later have to deal with slab leaks. Unlike a leaky faucet, damaged slab piping requires a qualified plumber to detect and fix the problem.

Important: To prevent significant damage from exhausted plumbing in your slab, pros recommend regular maintenance of the entire plumbing system yearly.

    What Causes a Slab Leak?

Usually, slab leaks are caused by one of the following factors or their combination:

    • Incorrectly built foundation.
    • Corrosion.
    • Age (The service life of any plumbing system is limited.)
    • Friction.
    • Earth movement.

How To Detect A Slab Leak: Signs of a Slab Leak

Located underneath a house, a slab space isn’t always in plain view, so you might be wondering how to find a slab leak. Watch out for meaningful signs indicative of a potential problem in your piping system. So, what are the signs of a slab leak?

    • Wet patches on flooring, walls, or carpets.
    • Musty odor. The unpleasant smell usually comes from high moisture content that affects various surfaces, including flooring and walls.
    • Mold growth. When slab leaks are ignored for a prolonged period, damp and moist space becomes an ideal environment for mold growth. As nasty as mold is, the worst thing is it is very difficult to get rid of and requires mold remediation specialists.
    • An increased water bill. Yes, you pay for water that you don’t use; even worse, you pay for extra water that damages your home. The more you delay repairs, the more you will pay at the end (repair costs and restoration costs).
    • Lower water pressure.
    • A water meter runs when faucets aren’t in use.
    • The sound of running water.

Even if you notice one of the signs of a slab leak, you might suspect a problem, so the first thing you need to do is call pros who are fully equipped for slab leak detection and repair work execution.

How long can a slab leak go undetected?

Slab leaks are nasty in that they can stay undetected for quite a while. Hence, it is vital to watch out for any minor signs pointing to potential leakage. When in doubt, contact a reliable plumber — while undetectable for a homeowner, slab leaks can be spotted by experienced staff.

What to Do if You Have a Slab Leak

Whenever you suspect a slab leak, whether because of a mold smell, audible dripping, or a suddenly increased bill, the first thing to do is to shut off the water supply and contact a competent specialist or a company that provides emergency plumbing services.

Can a slab leak be fixed?

Definitely, yes. Actually, slab leak repair works are considered a frequently-encountered routine among professionals: plumbing has a limited service life even when top-grade materials are used, not to mention the secondary housing market. The Re-Store Services crew has the expertise and all the necessary equipment to manage a slab leak of any complexity.

    Slab leak repair options

Typically, pros implement one of the following slab leak repair options:

    • Rerouting pipes. A new pipeline is installed next to the leaking one.
    • Jackhammering. Pros open a concrete section that covers the damaged pipe, cut out the trouble-delivering piece, and install the new part.

Costs to repair a slab leak

As with most home repairs, the cost to repair a slab leak varies significantly and depends on a myriad of factors, including the precise leak location and its accessibility, the chosen repair method, the quality of materials, and the scale of the problem. The national average is somewhere around $2,000; yet still, the expenditures may be both lower and higher than the average given the details of your specific situation.

    Does Insurance cover slab leaks?

Actually, it depends. All cases are different, and homeowner insurance policies vary. Unfortunately, slab leaks aren’t covered in most cases. However, an insurance provider can cover expenditures if your case meets the following criteria:

    • The policy includes water damage coverage.
    • Your house IS damaged. In case of no damage, repair costs won’t be covered.
    • The damage happened suddenly. In case of continuously ignored leaks, your claim will be rejected.

Note: Piping replacement costs aren’t usually covered by homeowner insurance. This is a weighty argument to have a slab leak addressed promptly, as delayed repairs might result in higher costs.

As a homeowner, you’d better learn multiple factors affecting pipe repair costs and how to choose a trustworthy contractor. Let’s get started.

How Much Does Pipe Leak Repair Cost?

Pipe leak repair cost can vary vastly and depends on many aspects, including, in particular, the location, pipe type, pipe age, and the cause of a leak. Fixing a clogged pipe under the sink costs less compared to a burst pipe in the basement.

Besides the major problem, a plumber can discover that a water pressure regulator is faulty or the faucet needs replacement. So, it’s not just a leaking pipe but the scale of the problem, its consequences, ease of access, and other factors that impact the final pipe repair costs. Let’s see the factors influencing the costs in more detail.

    Pipe Leak Repair Cost Factors

Leaky pipe type & location, age of the home plumbing system, and additional factors like the difficulty of work influence the overall repair costs.

    Different Types of Leaky Pipes

Plumbing systems are pretty complicated and consist of different pipe types. Fixing an underground sewer line differs from repairing a sink drainage pipe by the scope of work involved, accessibility, and necessary equipment.

    Fixing leaks, San Diego

Fixing small leaks as soon as you notice water dripping won’t cost a fortune. If a problem is with the main supply pipe, get ready to pay more; the total depends on the scale of the problem, pipe accessibility, and the necessity to change plumbing equipment, pipes, or fittings. Actually, rates vary and depend also on the pipe type (PVC, copper, etc.)

Waste lines are subdivided into drain piping inside your home and the sewer line underground. Repairing a clogged pipe under the sink or shower is easier and cheaper while fixing the sewer line is more labor-intensive.

Important: When it comes to sewer line leaks, be aware of biohazards that can put you at risk due to contamination. Hence, contact a plumber as soon as you suspect a leak.

Leaking pipes in heating lines are hazardous and require the urgent attention of a dedicated specialist. Usually, fixing a heating line costs vary notably and depend on a pipe type and length.

    Types & Age of Pipes

It makes sense that the older pipes are, the more they are prone to leaks; actually, like with anything else. The leaking pipe repair cost depends largely on the pipe type as well. As of now, plastic-based pipes, such as CPVC, PEX, PVC, and PP, are the most commonly used.

Cast iron, galvanized and copper pipes have a lifespan of up to 50 years; in fact, they are rarely used at the current moment – they are common for houses built before the 1960s. Most metal-based pipes are susceptible to corrosion and have been replaced by plastic ones in many older homes.

As of now, CPVC, PVC, PEX, and PP pipes are very popular among professionals: made of versatile plastic, they can be used for cold and hot water, do not corrode, and resist scaling. The service life is 50-80 years for PVC and CPVC and 75-100 for PEX and PP piping; durability, lightweight, and affordability are major characteristics that influenced the high demand. PVC and PP options are often used by plumbers for sewer lines.

    Leak Location

Pipe leak repair cost San Diego

Pipe location influences repair costs significantly — the easier the access to the leaky pipe, the lower the cost is. Repairing a small leak from an exposed sink piping won’t cost much, while problems with pipes behind walls or underground supply pipes will definitely cost more because extra work like ripping concrete is needed.

You can benefit from hiring repair companies as they not only provide plumbing services but also restoration: once a leak has been fixed, the crew will restore drywall, flooring, or basement to its initial condition and clean up the area.

    Leak Complexity

Leaks can be labor-intensive, particularly when the leaking pipe is located underground or behind the wall. Thus, the average rates aren’t always a good reference point. When you hire a local plumber, keep in mind that a minimum fee is around $50-100; however, an hourly rate may vary significantly and depends on the complexity of the work. Reputable companies usually offer a free estimation upon request.

When You Need to Contact a Leak Repair Specialist

As soon as possible to avoid worsening the situation and severe damage that requires costly repairs.

Ignored leaks and dubious DIY solutions offered by non-pros may lead to thousand-dollar damage to your property. And one more argument for repairing leaking pipes as fast as possible is your utility bill.

What aspects to pay attention to while hiring a leak repair specialist

First of all, make sure the company is licensed and certified for the services it offers.

Second, experience matters. Besides proper qualifications and training, experienced specialists are usually well-informed about the existing building codes in the area and can foresee potential scenarios and provide a comprehensive estimate for the leaking pipe repair cost.

Luckily for Californians, whenever you suspect a leaky pipe, you can contact experts at Re-Store Services (restorationserv.com), a San Diego-based restoration company with the established reputation of a full-scale restoration service. Re-Store pros have extensive experience in leaky pipe repair of any difficulty and provide emergency services 24/7.

    FAQ

Does homeowners insurance cover plumbing and pipe leaks?

In most cases, the homeowner insurance policy covers sudden water damage resulting from burst pipes or unexpected plumbing malfunction. However, water damage due to improper maintenance of pipelines or ongoing leaks is typically not covered by insurance providers.

How to find a leaking pipe?

Pay attention to any wet patches on the floor. Sometimes you can hear the sound of water dripping under or around sanitary equipment. Peeling on the walls and bloated laminate flooring are also indicative of leakage. Use your water meter to determine a leak: note the reading and make sure no water is used at the moment. If the indicator runs while no water is being used, you have a leaking pipe.

How long does it take to fix a burst pipe?

The repair period depends on the pipe type (exposed or closed) and the location. Exposed pipes can be done in half an hour; the average timing is from two to four hours, though. Closed pipes take longer time – repair works might require from a couple of hours to several days.

How to stop a leaking pipe until a plumber arrives?

The first thing to do is to shut off the water supply and turn off electrical appliances if water reaches them. Then try to drain & clean up the water and move the furniture aside. If you’ve determined a leaky pipe, you can try to patch a crack or hole with epoxy putty, rubber patches, or plumber tape.
